Audition Procedure/Video Tape/DVD Submission requirements

Audition for the 2011 – 2012 All State Jazz Band will be submitted on videotape or DVD. Students may audition for the Senior Band, Orchestra, or Chorus and Jazz Band. (If a student is selected for two groups, he/she will be able to perform in both ensembles!) Directors must submit a nomination/tape authentication form with each videotape/DVD for jazz audition to be received by November 2, 2011. Directors must submit a nomination form for each event for which a student is auditioning by the deadline. School music directors are to supervise the audition recording process and review each video tape/DVD before submission. Audition Requirements

It is the director’s responsibility to provide parts to the following audition selections. If a teacher is unable to provide needed selections to the students, please call the MMEA office for assistance in obtaining the audition music. Students must perform the requirements in the following order:

1.  Scales: C Major, A Major, Eb Major, Gb Major, C Melodic Minor, Ab Harmonic Minor

(Set players are not required to play scales.)

2. Prepared Piece #1: “Bird Blues” Jazz Etude – half note = 100, from Jim Snidero’s Jazz Conception Series published by Advance Music. This etude will be played in its entirety, as written, without benefit of the accompanying CD or a metronome device. (Refer to individual instrument listing for excerpts to be performed.)

3. Prepared Piece #2: “Groovin' Hard” composed by Don Menza, quarter note = 144, available from Walrus Music at walrusmusic.com catalogue number WMP 51429 (Refer to individual instrument listing for excerpts to be performed.)
4. Improvisation: Nothing But The Blues, Number 10, Fast Blues in F, from New Approach to Jazz Improvisation Volume 2, by Jamey Aebersold. Students should perform improvised solos with the audio track (included in Aebersold book) playing in the background. Improvisation is not required, however, students who improvise will earn more points than students who do not attempt improvisation. Set players are not required to improvise.

5. Rhythm Section Groove Requirements: Metronome use to establish each tempo is permitted, however students/directors must turn off the metronome before starting the groove.

Acoustic/String and/or Electric Bass, Piano, Guitar, and Vibraphone Comping: (Note: Comping is jazz slang for accompaniment. In other words, the harmonic and rhythmic support provided by the piano, bass, guitar and vibraphone.)

Blues changes, key of B-flat: One chorus in the following styles and tempi in the order listed below (chord substitutions and standard variations on the blues progression is highly recommended):
