2018-2019 All State Junior Chorus Information: Auditions November 10, 2018
Information and Requirements:
Auditions for the All State Junior Chorus will be Saturday, November 10, 2018. Students must attend an independent (private), parochial, or public school in Maryland and meet the class membership and grade designations (grades 7 - 9) to be eligible to participate in the All State auditions.
To participate in the Maryland All State activities, a student must be enrolled in a chorus class. In high schools in which an alternative scheduling program is operating, the student may participate in the year in which he or she earns a full credit. Any questions should be directed to the MMEA Executive Director by the Choral Teacher. Students and parents are not to call.
There will be three audition sites:
1. Broadneck High School, Anne Arundel County
2. Perry Hall Middle School, Baltimore County
3. Urbana Middle School, Frederick County
Copy the application page from your music supervisor as many times as needed. Please indicate your preferred audition site. If your students need to go to different sites, use one form for each site requested. Send the completed form to be received by the MMEA Executive Director no later than September 28, 2018. Use one form for every ten students who will audition. No limit will be placed upon the number from each school; however, please be sure that all singers meet the range requirements on p. 3 of this document. There will be no divisi auditions. A student auditioning for All State Junior Chorus may audition for All State Junior Band if the student meets the eligibility requirements.
In the event that a student arrives at the audition site with the incorrect audition music prepared, the student will be given the correct music and up to an hour to prepare the correct music before the audition.
Each student will audition for the teacher/student identified voice part that is in the most comfortable vocal range. If a voice change occurs after the registration, the teacher must contact the MMEA Office as soon as possible. MCEA strongly supports and expects decisions that are most appropriate for individual vocal health.
Vocal evaluations will be based primarily on:
1. Vocal quality
2. Performance accuracy of sung selections
3. Ability to read and sing accurately and on pitch
A. Performance Selections
1. Accompanied Piece
Be prepared to sing your part in “Achieved is the glorious work”, Haydn, Public Domain, SATB. Music must be downloaded from the MMEA web page. The students will sing the entire piece in the correct octave. Practice tracks are available on the MMEA website. Photocopies may be used. Music will not be supplied at auditions.
2. A Capella Piece
Be prepared to sing from memory and without accompaniment, “Simple Gifts,” exactly as the notes and rhythms are printed and in the correct octave. Students are expected to use the expressive elements and the suggested tempo indicated in the a cappella piece. Students will sing in the following keys: Soprano: Bb Major, Alto: Eb Major, Tenor: Bb Major, Bass: E Major. (See scores on the following pages). The tonic chord, scale, and tonic chord again will be played on the audition recording. Students must find their starting pitch from the final chord.
B. Sight Reading:
Teachers of visually impaired students should consult the policies and procedures posted online, and notify the MMEA office of the preferred method for any such students.
1. Rhythmic Sight Reading
Students will be asked to perform two rhythmic sight reading examples. They may choose to clap, tap, say syllables, or whatever method is used in class. One example will be in 3/4 and one in 4/4 time. The examples will be four measures long and may include a variety of rhythm values. Simple syncopated patterns will be included. See examples. The students will be given a short practice time and can practice out loud or silently. Students will be asked to establish their tempo by counting one full measure before beginning the example.
2. Melodic Sight Reading
Students will be asked to perform two melodic sight reading examples. They may choose to sing on syllables, numbers, or a neutral vowel. One example will be in 3/4 and one in 4/4 time. Each example will be four measures in length, will include any pitches in the C major scale and may cover a one-octave range. Tenors will sing the sight reading examples in the key of C from a score notated in the key of C, using pitches within the octave of g below middle c to g second line, treble staff. All examples will be presented in treble and bass clefs. See examples.
All students selected for the Maryland All State Junior Chorus will receive custom rehearsal tracks with their voice part and the accompaniment for each piece on the program.
The Junior Chorus will rehearse at the Sheraton North in Towson, on Friday, March 1 - Sunday, March 3, 2019. The concert will be on Sunday, March 3 at Perry Hall High School.

The music requirements for each group are listed below. It is the student’s responsibility to acquire the music and prepare it. School directors should assist in this process. Copies of the music will not be provided at the auditions. The a cappella piece must be memorized for the audition.
Photocopies may be used for the Junior Chorus as the piece is in public domain.
