Congratulations! You’ve been selected as a member of 2019 All State. Please read all the information and act quickly so that you complete everything before the December 21 deadline. We will ship/deliver your music to your teacher at school 3 weeks in advance so that you will have sufficient time to prepare. Selection for All State is is by invitation only and must be confirmed with your teacher.
The fee for public school students is $340 per person.
The fee for students in independent/private school is $391 per person. This includes the fee ($51) to cover musical expenses. Some private/independent schools pay this musical expense for their students.
If the school/county is contributing, online partial payment for students is unavailable at this time. Please include a specific note and mail in the payment to: MMEA, 791 Aquahart Rd., Ste 117, Glen Burnie, MD 21601. We encourage all forms to still be submitted online.
Read the rules carefully before you seek the necessary signatures. Do not presume you are an exception to the rules. When students or their parents do not take the rules seriously and are dismissed, there are often consequences back at school. Remember that you are representing your school at a state-wide school music event.
Details will accompany your music. Right now, you need to complete the commitment process before the deadline. You are reviewing the following: 1) A general information letter, 2) Commitment Form, 3) Medical Form, 4) Rules Governing the All State Performing Groups, 5) Rules for All State Parents or Guardians 6) Shirt order information, 7) DVD/CD order information, and 8) Hotel/Meal/Extra Ticket/Fee or Items Form. Your hotel arrangements will be handled through the MMEA office. Rehearsals will be at the hotel. It is a ticketed event. The concerts will be professionally recorded. The DVD and/or CD may be ordered online or at the concert.
Once you have agreed to the commitment and accept the responsibility for membership and participation, secure the written or electronic signatures of your parent/guardian, your school music teacher (not your private teacher) and school principal. You know now that those signatures are needed. Not having signatures by the deadline is not an excuse. Plan ahead. If you must decline the invitation, please do so by December 15 so that an alternate musician may have sufficient time to complete the process.
All State is one of the most valuable musical experiences a student can have, and it does not come without cost. In addition to all the preparation which you have and will put into the music, the experience costs money. The musical expense -- the conductors, the music, the moving of equipment, etc. are supported by most school administrators. Students pay for their hotel room and meals and the bus transportation from the hotel to the concert site. All students spend two nights in the hotel as assigned, under chaperon supervision.
Details and directions to the hotel will accompany your music. Report 1.5 hours prior to the start of rehearsal. You will receive two complimentary tickets with your music. Additional tickets are $10 and may be ordered online. After January 18, tickets will cost $15.
All students will stay at a designated hotel, two to a room, under chaperone supervision, even if parents are staying at a nearby hotel. Transportation between the hotel and the concert site will be provided by bus. Instruments may be locked in the rehearsal room.
To secure your place in the group, you must complete the following forms listed below. Get the details (forms and fees) taken care of so you can get your music and start practicing immediately! Your music will be sent to your school teacher/director. Forms include:
1) Commitment Form with appropriate signatures, 2) Medical Form; 3) Hotel/Meal/Fee/Items Form, and 4) pay online, forward a check or money order for room/meals, payable to MMEA, by the deadline. There are no refunds. If you do not respond by the deadline, your position may be reassigned to an alternate. Checks or money orders may include payment for extra tickets, DVDs, CDs, and shirts. Please note that there is a fee ($35) for returned checks. A credit card processing fee of $10.00 exists. Partial payment online is unavailable at this time. If there is a problem with the payment, talk to your director. Please do not presume you cannot participate. But please realize that we must have the rooming list and deposit to the hotel and you need your music by that time. Some schools provide financial help and some booster groups loan the money to students to be repaid over a period of several months.
Students are responsible for their own transportation to the hotel on the first day of rehearsal and after the concert. Any student who has not been picked up from the concert site an hour after the concert may be picked up at the Baltimore City Precinct Police Station, 1900 Argonne Dr. Baltimore, MD 21218.
If you have a question, ask your school band director. If your director does not know the answer, your director should call the MMEA office for the answer. If there is a special circumstance, your director should call the office and someone from the office may call your parent or guardian.
Know where you need to be for the rehearsals and performances. And know when you need to be there. Arrive early.
To make an electronic signature write your signature on a piece of paper. Photo or scan it and save it. Open the image file and crop it. Upload the signature to the document.
This promises to be a great experience and is by invitation only. We look forward to sharing it with you. Students who have been members of the All State Bands and Orchestras in the past can tell you that the experience is intense -- but great fun. You will meet musicians from all around the state and you will finish the weekend proud of your achievement with lots of new friends! Encourage friends and family to support and give toward music education.
